3 of my favorite Fall Coat Styles (with petite options!)

Jacket weather sprung upon us this week in Boston, so I wanted to round up 3 versatile styles for those looking to build up your cold weather wardrobes. Most of these options are currently fully stocked in both regular and petite sizing, but as I’m sure you guys know, the smaller petite sizes don’t linger for long!

1. The Belted Wrap Coat

A piece that’ll never go out of style. I love that wrap jackets are a little less structured and can adjust to fit, whether you’re looking to cover up thick layers or an early baby bump! You can also swap in a leather waist belt for a different look!

Worth a look:

  • Ann Taylor shawl collar coat on sale! in petite & regular.
This has been a best seller over the past 3 years, so I’m thrilled to see it back! Read my review from last year with measurements. The fabric weight is thicker so it’s more of a late fall – winter piece.
Ann Taylor is having a buy more, save more promo this weekend! A few other pieces to check out: 1) this classic white tie neck blouse with a slight puff shoulder, that isn’t sheer if you wear skin-toned undergarments; 2) this seemingly simple, but elegant and flattering mock neck drapey blouse that works well tucked into skirts and trousers 3) this trumpet flare knit skirt that fits without alterations and is also bump friendly (note it may be too form fitting for professional wear) and 4) the very flattering Madison high waist trousers are back! I’m wearing the older version here, with the waist taken in.

2. The double breasted Trench Coat

I get more wear out of my trenches than any other pieces in my closet! Here in Boston they’re good for 3 out of the 4 seasons (including mild winter days), which can’t be said for many other items. I also love that a good trench can instantly polish up even a simple tee + jeans outfit.

Worth a Look:

  • ASOS Design trench coat (under $80!) in petite, regular, tall, maternity. Petites also in blush & rust.
International readers take note: ASOS offers either free or affordable shipping to tons of countries! Their sizing runs small, and a 00 petite is usually a perfect or too small fit on me. I certainly don’t expect this to compare to my holy grail Burberry trench, but it looks like a fairly classic jacket at a great price. UPDATE: I finally tried this on and fit is great for petites, but I was not impressed by material quality.

    Tip:
I always click on the video under each product page to see the item in action! They actually use petite models to showcase many of their petite pieces. Also, I recommend ASOS “Premier Delivery” ($19 to add during checkout) which gives you a year of 2-day shipping on all orders! I’m always seriously impressed by how quickly the items show arrive from the UK.
  • Express Classic Trench coat in petite & regular.
Express makes a pretty great trench coat in a rainbow of EIGHT colors, but alas, only the black one comes in petite! I love the material on this as it’s actually weather / rain resistant to some degree, and easy to keep clean. I’ve tried on the xxs regular (see photo below, details in this post) which suits my 5’2,” 105lb mom very well, so I’m pretty sure the petite version would be a perfect fit on someone my size!

3. the cozy Teddy coat

This style looks perfect for throwing over leggings and sneakers for running errands or #momlife. I was slightly obsessed with these last year but missed out on my size everywhere! Thankfully the trend is still going strong – I’ve ordered a couple styles to try, but wanted to share these while all sizes were still in stock!

Worth a Look:

  • Abercrombie teddy coat on sale! starting in regular xxs, in 3 neutral colors.
20% off this weekend, discount reflected in cart! I haven’t tried this one yet, but there’s one promising review from a fellow 5-footer.
  • J.Crew petite teddy jacket, in petite & regular
How seriously cuddly does this look?

Hi Jean, I know you did a review on the Goyard bags, but I don’t remember your review on the tote. Really thinking about Goyard tote for all purpose. Want something light weight to carryall. Would you recommend?

Hi Jean! I tried the Calvin Klein belted wrap coat and as much as I wanted to love it, the sizing was way off. I ordered my standard size of XS petite and the sleeves were way too long, the shoulders too wide, and the waist too large. It did not fit like a petite and felt more like regular sizing. I will unfortunately be returning.

      Hey Jean,

I have the Ann Taylor wrap coat in grey (bought on your recommendation and has lasted two pregnancies!) and the tie has gone missing 😕 it may yet turn up, but could you suggest some leather ties to replace as you mentioned in the post? Much appreciated and hope you’re staying safe and healthy!

Hi Smita – I use a medium width leather belt, sometimes a wide one like my Gucci belt for a different look. Or I often just wear that AT coat open!

Hi Jenny, do you mean the blush pink one? That one is my moms and it was from earlier this year but that same link.

I love the grey Ann Taylor wrap coat but unfortunately they no longer have it in the petite size in that color. They so have a beautiful grey herringbone coat but it only comes in regular sizes. Any ideas on how I can get my hands on a grey one in petite xxs or xs?

You can check poshmark or ebay or wait a little longer to see if they’ll introduce more colors in petites! You could also try some of the similar styles from Macy’s?

Great pieces — and love how you paired them. Can you provide a tutorial on how you tie the belts in that fantastic bow? Can never get my coat belts tied neatly, much less looking so well styled!

    Thanks!

    Hi Jean,

Thanks for your post! I have a silly question. How do you tie/knot your coat belts into a bow? I can’t seem to tie them without them them looking like a big bulge nor can I find any tutorials online.

Hi Maggie, I’m actually completely unsure about their kids sizing (and about how that coat will look in person…) but I did order a sz 14 to try on and will report back!
